NZTrio performs a vibrant programme of classical music including work by contemporary New Zealand composers.

Both versatile and genre-busting, NZTrio epitomises the relevance of live music in a digital age.

This group smashes preconceptions of classical music being stuffy and intimidating by engaging their listeners with intimate and dynamic performances. Each concert is a unique experience. Mixing musical cultures and genres, and often involving collaborations with a diverse range of international artists, NZTrio inspires people of all walks of life to see classical music, both old and new as approachable, essential and meaningful.

Described as ‘a national treasure’ (NZ Herald), NZTrio represents some of the best talent New Zealand has to offer. Amalia Hall (violin), Ashley Brown (cello) and Somi Kim (piano) bring us a look into their musical and cultural heritages with this colourful programme that celebrates the connective powers of music. Known for their warm Kiwi stage presence and outside-the-box programming, this ensemble has achieved an impressive 50-plus commissioned works in its 17 year history and has showcased at least one NZ work in every concert performance since its inception.
At Cowra’s 2020 Festival of International Understanding we will hear three of these commissions: the toe-tapping crowd favourite Subtle Dances by Claire Cowan, frenzied gypsy sounds of ancient Greece in Tarantismo by John Psathas, and a spellbinding brand new commission from Sarah Ballard titled Prema Lahari - a world premiere performance especially for the Festival.
Also on the programme are two masterworks: Beethoven’s mighty Ghost trio in celebration of his birth a quarter of a millennium ago, and Austrian-American, Jewish-Muslim Alexander von Zemlinsky’s Piano Trio to finish on a note of diversity, understanding and love.

A featured event of the Festival, book early to avoid missing out.
